Lily: Well, he's an old friend of Cyrus. You've been saying the mid-range art market is dead, so I thought it might be nice for you to meet a few high-end collectors. Blair: Well, if it's casual like you say, no strings... Then what do you expect? It's not like you're gonna marry the guy. Serena: I kind of did marry him. We got carried away. I talked to Cyrus. He said it doesn't count. Blair: Let me get this straight. He goads you into making the ultimate commitment, and now he can't stick it out through a whole dinner? Serena: He didn't goad me. It was...romantic. Blair: Gabriel is disappearing for a reason. We need to get to the bottom of it. no strings: 没有限制,没有附加条件,完整的说法是no strings attached. carry away: to move or excite greatly it doesn't count: 那不算数,意思是S的那段酒后宣誓的婚姻无效。 Let me get this straight: 恕我直言,我就直说了吧 goad: 本意是赶牲口用的刺棒,引申含义就是刺激某人做某事 stick it out: 坚持 get to the bottom of it: 寻根问底,找出事实真相 2. Gabrielle: Listen, these contracts will be done in one week. And after that, I promise you I will tell her everything. Trust me. The money she'll make, it'll cushion the blow. Serena: As long as it's not physical, then I... I guess I can live with it. cushion the blow: cushion有“减缓冲击”的意思,结合它的本意“垫子”应该不难理解。 I can live with it: 我还可以忍受 5. Chuck: She told you about our little run-in last night. Nate: You told me you'd back off. run-in: 偶遇 back off: 靠边站,不管这件事,和leave it alone很像,但是语气更加严厉。 6. Blair: I thought if I proved the North Caro liar was cheating with his ex, that would be it, but she fell for his business meeting excuse-- monkey business, more likely. If we act now, we block them completely and we make at least triple our investment. a ticking clock: 时间不等人,老外还很喜欢说The clock is ticking, tick就是钟表的“滴答”声,同样也是表示urgent的意思。 |

Uh, Serena thinks she can somehow sweet-talk him into giving everything back, but I mean, r... seriously, I... I don't think Blair and Chuck can scheme their way out of this one. con artist: con是confidence的缩写,confidence artist或者confidence man指的就是诈骗犯。 Thompson常常和陌生人搭讪,直到骗取他们信任,接着就问他们是否信任他并把他们的手表交给他(if they had the confidence to lend him their watches),之后他就拿着手表走人。 3. Serena: He's not the one we need, and besides, if we really need to find him, I don't think it'll be that hard. Nate: But why would Poppy stay in town after what she did? Serena: Well, she has to if she's gonna play the victim. She... she wants us to think Gabriel fooled her, too. Chuck: She wants money. All we need to provide is some sap she thinks she can get it from. P.I.: Private Investigator, 私家侦探 crook: 骗子 play the victim: 装做是受害者,这个“装”用play sap: 俚语傻瓜的意思。 6. Serena: I don't care what my mother says. Poppy Lifton must pay. Blair: I knew you would come to your senses. pay: 付出代价 come to your senses: 你总算想通了 7. Um, let me just call the bank to set up a wire transfer. Poppy: Oh, um, I'm sorry. Just because of the time crunch, I'm afraid I'm only gonna be able to accept cash. get you in: 让你入伙,让你加入。get in这种词组,看英文很容易理解中文意思,但是真的要等我们用英文表达出这个中文意思的时候,却常常会“卡壳”,所以建议大家平时多留意一下这类小词。 wire transfer: 电汇 time crunch: 时间紧急,crunch可以表示emergency |

Cece: Oh, what a restorative nap that was. I feel so much better. Lily: Well, I'm afraid that moment is not going to last. Cece: Eric’s out of earshot? Lily: I sent him to a movie with Jonathan. Cece: So no one can hear me scream. You're gonna what, lily, hack me to pieces, suffocate me with a pillow? restorative: 有助恢复元气的。我觉得restorative这种单词是比较难记也比较难用的,这类单词的特点就是表达方式和中文完全不一样。比如同样一句话,中文说“睡了一个午觉,让我神清气爽,体力也恢复了”,于是英文我们就会按照中文习惯翻成”a nap makes me…”, 但其实英文用一个restorative nap就搞定了。 earshot: 听力所及之范围,out of earshot就表示听不见的意思 hack me to pieces: 把我大卸八块,hack就是砍的意思。 6. Cece: Your sister was rebellious and ungrateful for my love, and look where she ended up. Lily: From where I'm sitting, it doesn't look so bad. I don't want you meddling with my family or with my love life anymore. I want you out, now. look where she ends up: 看看她的下场是怎么样的 from where I’m sitting: 从我的角度来说,就我看来…… meddle with: 搅和 7. Owen: Personally, I don't see it. Lily: See what? Owen: The family resemblance. 8. Lily: It just--Your life isn't exactly how you described. You told mom that you were making it out in L.A. Carol: I am making it. This is what making it looks like...before you've totally made it. make out: 出人头地,有成就 9. Blair: This is low, even for you. I can't believe you did this, Chuck. You know how important prom is to me! Serena: Blair, what's wrong? I caught him with these. They're all marked with Nelly Yuki's name. He's sabotaging me. low: 低级的,整句话的意思就是“即使对你来说,这也太低级了吧” sabotage: 暗中破坏 10. Cece: You think Serena's a handful? I would rather have 20 Dan Humphreys from Brooklyn instead of that boy you loved from the valley. Lily: Well, you took care of that, didn't you? handful: someone, often a child, who is difficult to deal with, 另人头疼的人 take care of that: 搞定了,fix |

Serena: Okay, can you just take my mind off of me? Talk about anything. Blair: Did he say it like... Serena: Anything but-- Blair: "I love her"?" Serena: I totally set myself up for that one. take my mind off: 不去想,转移注意力。这里S和B在聊gossip girl, S的意思是拜托你,我们换个话题吧。 I totally set myself up for that one: set up表示“陷害,设圈套”,这句话的意思是“都是我自找的”,有点像中文的“自作孽”。前面S要B换个话题,于是B又那Chuck说“I love you”这件事情来烦S,所以S说自己绕来绕去,还是没的安宁。 2. Nate: Good, good. I start my internship at the mayor's office next week. Vanessa: So that's the big news. Nate: As for today ,I got my mom and my grandpa to agree to sit together, so that's something. internship: 实习 so that's something: 那还不错,那还挺了不起 3. Cyrus: We were talking on the way over here about what a wonderful couple you two make. So we decided you should take the plunge like us. Dating at our age is not enough, marry before it's too late. Rufus: Well, it's not exactly-- uh, we're just enjoying the journey. Lily: Well, apparently at one point we had a destination, but that no longer seems to be the case. take the plunge: to marry someone. plunge本意是跳入,冒险做某事,这个词组除了结婚,还可以用来指你经过很长一段时间犹豫后,最终决定做某事。 we're just enjoying the journey: 享受过程 that no longer seems to be the case: 现在已经不是那样了,情况已经不同了 4. Serena: Chuck, get the room quiet for me. Chuck: I'm way ahead of you. way ahead of you: 早就想到,在你说之前我就想过了。这句话用在你们两人想同一件事情或者想说同一句,但是对方比你快一步说出来,你就可以说way ahead of you, 意思是我只是说的比你晚,但其实我也想到了。 5. Serena: Can I actually borrow you for a minute? I'd like you to help me dig deeper. Jenny: Nothing in here's good enough to beat the new girl... except for this. Eric: No way. borrow you for a minute: 借一步说话 No way: 这里不是“没门”的意思了,这里表示“不是吧,不会吧”,惊讶的意思 6. Rufus: You going to Nate's party? Dan: Uh, no. I thought Vanessa and I would hit a movie instead. hit a movie: 看电影,hit是一个很百搭的单词,有点”do”的意思,比较随意的讲法。洗澡也可以说hit a shower, 出发、上路就是hit the road 7. Isabelle: It's not midnight. Jenny: My gossip's too juicy to wait. juicy: interesting and exciting,形容八卦很吸引人 8. Gossip girl: Serena Van der Woodsen just couldn't leave well enough alone. Since she had to find out the truth about me, I'm going to tell you the truth about everyone. Every gossip bomb I've got is about to drop, and if you've got a problem with that, take it up with her. leave alone: leave unchanged or undisturbed or refrain from taking,放手,相当于let it go get a problem with: 很口语化的讲法,表示有意见,有问题 take up: deal with, 和她去交涉,找她算帐 9. Nate: Oh, my god. Dan: Oh, that makes sense. Nate: Wait. They're a team. Blair: Team of what? that makes sense: 这就说的通了,这就有道理了。当时Nate, Serena, Dan都在酒吧里等gossip girl, 结果等来的是Blair, Dan说这句话的意思就是Blair是最有可能是gossip girl的人。makes sense在否定句里(it doesn’t make any sense)用的也很多,意思是某句话“毫无道理,一点都说不通”。 Team of what: “什么团队”这句话让我们说的话很容易会翻成”what team”, 但其实应该用team of what, 这个就是很典型的中文和英文思维差异。 10. Serena: Drink’s on me. something is on me: 我请客,我做东,比如你请客晚餐,就可以说dinner’s on me. |
