The experts said the UN needed to re-think its policy on the conflict. They also warned that the general situation in the Mid-east including Iraq meant that the need to build bridges was greater than ever before. Excepting the report, the UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said the attacks on the United States in 2001, Mid-east war and the turmoil and what he called air considered drawings had inflamed tensions between different cultures. He called on people of all religions to respect each other. We must stress the basic values that are common to all religions: compassion, solidarity, respect for the human person and golden rule of “do as you would be done by”. Some news just in. The Lebanese Cabinet has approved draft United Nations plans for setting up an international tribunal to try suspects in the assassination of the former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. Syria has been implicated in the bombing that killed Mr. Hariri last year but denies involvement. The decision to back plans for the tribunal came hours after the resignation of another pro-Syrian Minister, the sixth to quit the Lebanese government since Saturday. It says environmental problems have damaged China’s international image, half its rivers were severely polluted and a third of its cities were damaged by acid rain. From Shanghai, Quentin Sommerville reports. China has some of the most polluted cities on the planet. The head of the State Environmental Agency Zhou Shengxian says the environmental situation is damaging people’s health and could threaten the social stability of the country. China has achieved astonishing economic growth over the past 2 decades, but the environment has paid the price. Factories have been freed to pollute the country’s air and rivers without punishment. The widespread pollution has led to protests across the country and prompted the leadership in Beijing to make ambitious commitments to cut energy use and recycle waste. Medical experts at the International Conference in Diabetes have warned that the disease is capable of completely wiping out indigenous people in the Pacific and some other parts of the world by the end of the century. The conference heard that there was a death from diabetes every ten seconds and an amputation every thirty seconds. The host of the conference in Australia, Professor Paul Zimmet said the world was dealing with the biggest epidemic in its history.
