The reactor will be structured at Katarash in southern France, but is not expected to be operational until 2018. The project involves fusing atoms to generate energy without leaving the radioactive ways produced by the current fission reactors. Caroline Wyatt reports from Paris. The French President Jacques Chirac welcomed the officials representing more than half of the world’s population, from the nations backing this attempt to find a new clean source of energy before fossil fuels run out. The international thermal nuclear experimental reactor, known ITNER, as is known for short, is the biggest international science project so far the century. The expensive experiment is aimed at using nuclear fusion rather than fission to general energy. Current nuclear reactors rely on splitting atoms to release energy. But scientists say that if fusion can be made to work. It would provide a much more abundant form of energy. A report commissioned by the Australian government has recommended nuclear energy as a viable automotive to coal and gas. The report said Australia which has the world’s largest deposit of uranium could produce nuclear power within ten to 15 years. It’s said by 2015, 25 fission reactors could be supplying a third of the country’s energy needs. You are listening to the world news form the BBC.
