Cars and buses carrying mourners followed the funeral cottage as it made its way slowly through a large crowd of mourners out of his home village towards the capital. Mr. Gemayel’s supporters have vowed to stage assure a public outrage. Kim Ghattas reports from Beirut. People have been heading to this square in the central of Beirut since the earlier hours of the morning. I can see Christian supporters of the late Pierre Gemayel, and they are waving the flag of his Phalange Party. But there are also Muslims here waving the red white and green Lebanese flag. The people who have gathered here for the funeral share Mr. Gemayel’s political views, and those of the anti-Syrian coalition that he belonged to. Posters have also been put up everywhere showing the face of the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, on the slogan “shove your civil war”. People here accused Syria of killing Mr. Gemayel and an attempt to start another civil conflict in Lebanon. Syria denies it has any involvement in the killing. In a Parliamentary elections in the Netherlands, the Christian Democratic Party of the Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende has won the largest number of seats. With almost all the votes counted, the Christian Democrats have fewer seats than they previously hoped. But the main opposition Labor Party has also seen its support slip. Far-right and far-left parties have both made gains. Amid celebrations at his headquarters, Mr. Balkenende claimed victory, but said the hard work of forming a coalition would now begin. “Question now was which party will be the largest party in the Netherlands. And it was indeed a big fight between the Labor Party, the Social Democrats and my Party—the Christian Democrats. And after all these difficult years, after all the reforms that were necessary for all of the country, now we’ve seen it again that the Christian Democrats has won this election. I think that’s of great significance also for the future of the Netherlands.” The hospital in London treating the former Russian Intelligence Agent Alexander Litvinenko, who was apparently poisoned three weeks ago, says his condition has deteriorated overnight and that he is now very seriously ill. A hospital source also says unidentified objects have been detected in his body. Mr. Lityinenko’s friends have accused the Russian Authorities of trying to kill him. The Kremlin denies any involvement. Here is the BBC security correspondent Gordon Corera. “According to a hospital source, an X-ray ordered on Tuesday afternoon revealed three objects of dense matter launched in Mr. Lityinenko’s intestines—a round object, possibly a package about the size of a two pence piece in his left abdomen and similar size objects in his colon and his small bowel. One of these may have ruptured. Their position implies that they were ingested. However, it’s not clear what the objects are, how or when they entered his body or whether they are connected to his illness. The metropolitan police said it had no knowledge of the items and University college hospital refused to comment on the report.” 楼主
